Why Do Cows Dance on the First of the Month?
By the First of the Month Cows developer · Updated · About us
Short answer: because of a meme. On the 1st of every month, people post dancing cows with the line "wake up, it's the first of the month", a nod to a 1995 rap song about the day the checks arrive. Cows do not actually do anything special on the 1st. Here is how the joke works.

The song gives the reason
"1st of tha Month" is about the first day of the month as the day money comes in. It is a happy, laid-back song, and its hook tells everyone to wake up because it is the first of the month.

The cows give the picture
The cows come from a fan edit that matched the song to a scene of cartoon cows dancing at a barn party. Cows standing up and dancing is already funny; with the song it became the perfect "it’s the 1st" reaction clip.
The calendar makes it a ritual
Because the date comes back every month, so does the post. People share it as a greeting, a payday joke or just a tradition. Searches for the phrase spike around every 1st, then fall until the next month.
Do real cows dance?
No. Cows can be playful, and calves especially run and jump when let out to pasture in spring, but they do not stand on their hind legs and dance. The realistic versions on TikTok since November 2026 are AI-generated.
